\nNormals<\/em> writes a subversive utopian history and presents a
\nchoice of an alternative model of gender. The “Normals” in
\nthis model are separated from the “boys” (“Knaben”) and
\n“girls” (“M\u00e4dchen”) by a fence. Through academic language,
\ncomplete with references, Normals<\/em> plays with the credibility
\nof scientific research: if the language is appropriate, an
\nallegation becomes accepted as truth.<\/p>\n

\nSeparate Schoolyards: The Site Plan
\nof the Schoolyard of the
\nMunicipal School in the Kastanienallee, 1902
\nIn the years between 1890 and 1900, numerous German schools
\nimplemented three-part instruction, based on the model of sexual
\npsychologist Erich D. Fraunstein. Fraunstein was supposed to have
\nproven through extensive studies that children and youth who
\nconsciously allocate themselves to one gender tend to a notable degree
\ntoward unchastity and onanism. For this reason, these children were to
\nbe strictly separated from the normals during lessons. An important
\nrole therein fell to the structural separation of the schoolyards.
\nFraunstein stipulated particularly firm regulations for unruly \u201cgirls\u201d.
\nFraunstein’s concept was systematically implemented at the Municipal
\nSchool in the Kastanienallee. The site plan shows the barriers around
\nthe \u201cgirls’\u201d yard. The significantly smaller dimensions of the \u201cspecial\u201d
\nyards indicate to what extent many \u201cboys\u201d and \u201cgirls\u201d in this era must
\nhave suffered from their stigmatization. Fraunstein’s concept, while
\nappearing outlandish today, enjoyed a lively popularity until 1914,
\nafter which, in the course of the First World War and the global
\nadvance of psychological analysis, it became lost to memory.
